This project is the Hawaiian Honeycreeper project. It was a project we did in our biology class, and it took around a week or so to complete. The idea of the project was to find a species that was an example of adaptive radiation, and write in their point of view. We had to cover what the species looked like, food, its habitat, population, how they adapted, etc. It was in the format of a newspaper/article.
I chose this as a work sample for my portfolio because it came near the end of our genetics unit, and it was the last project we had for the quarter in biology. It helped us understand what we learned and why we learned it.
I believe this project and my work for it represents the Self Directional 21st century skill. We had to do the research for the specific honey creeper species as well as apply what we learned in order to complete it. We also had to come up with a bit of a story as well.
This project helps represent my current growth because I had to figure a lot of what to do on my own, I created the layout for the article, had to figure out what was important to add and what wasn't, etc. I learned even more about adaptive radiation because I had to actually describe it myself, in the point of view of an animal of a species that is an adaptive radiation example. I also think if I did the project again, it would be a lot better.
If I had to redo the project, I would probably edit the layout more because I understand how to use the website I used for it more. I think adaptive radiation would also be a little easier to explain now because I had seen everyone else present their projects as well, so there were many examples and different ways of explaining it, so now I have a better understanding. Although I think my project turned out alright overall.
