This project was done in my chemistry class at the end of third quarter. We made ice cream by putting ice and rock salt into a bag, then half and half, sugar, and other ingredients into a smaller bag and put that one into the ice bag. After that we shook it until it turned into a more solid consistency instead of liquid. We did this in groups of four or five, and all had to bring our own materials, except for the ice which one student provided for the whole class. It was a good end to the third quarter, and the ice cream turned out really well. Overall it was a successful project.
This assignment addresses the interpersonal 21st century skill. We worked in groups and had to communicate outside of the class time figure out who would be bringing what ingredient/materials. While we were doing the project, we had to make sure everyone was doing something productive to help make the ice cream so we could all enjoy it. Two of us put the ingredients in the bag, and the other two took turns shaking it to turn the concoction into ice cream. I improved in this skill by stepping up and volunteering to do something, instead of waiting to be assigned a role.
I'm most proud of the result of this project. We worked efficiently, and were able to make three batches or the ice cream, which was pretty delectable. The most difficult thing about the task was communicating to get what we needed for the project. Not everyone in my group shared many classes so we had to get in touch through technology, and not everyone was available at the same times so it took a while to make sure that we'd have all the ingredients and supplies that were necessary to make the ice cream. So if we were to do this project again, then I think better communication is something I'd do differently.
