In community engagement, we have been working with Hawaii Animal Rescue Foundation all throughout second semester. As an assessment, we had to either create a cart for a dog with two legs, create/work on a social media account for the foundation, or create an educational video for younger kids on a topic that has to do with adopting a pet, or animals in general. My group created a video on how to approach a dog, as well as how to read a dog's body language.
This assignment addresses the Civic Literacy and Engagement skill. Volunteers from HARF come in pretty often and tell us about what they do, how they work and what they need that we could help them with. They talk a lot about how it's pretty easy to get involved, it just takes some time. I now better understand the impact of what they do and how it helps the community of our island. Making the video, I myself learned better ways to approach a dog I don't know. I learned about issues with animals that I hadn't thought much about before, and with that I realized that there's probably even more issues I'm unaware of that need solving.
I'm really proud with how this video turned out. I'm very interested in film and editing so I actually had a lot of fun with this project. Though it was a lot more work than it seems. The video is only about 2 minutes and 30 seconds long, but I spent at least 2 and a half hours editing it. The script writing took some time as well, and so did trying to keep the group motivated and productive. I did a lot of the work myself, but I got help when I asked for it from my group members. If I could do the project again, I think I'd try to split the work up more evenly so I'm not stressing over it too much. But like I said, even if the video is shorter than I anticipated, I'm still happy with the result.
I've done multiple projects that incorporate filming or making a video since middle school. Every time I always enjoy it, probably more than some of my peers. I'm glad that we do projects like that because I want to hopefully get into the film industry as a career, either as a producer, director, or something like it. I've been interested in this for a long time and I believe I continue to get better each time.
