This Monday in community engagement, we went to the whale sanctuary area to learn about what people do there. We listened to one of the people talk about many aspects of the Hawaiian culture, like how they used to live and how they're trying to keep those traditions going to try to be self sustainable.
Global Awareness is a 21st century skill that goes with this. Getting out there and seeing the work that he does was very interesting. We even learned a chant that Hawaiian people would do in the morning, or when they need motivation. I saw that it takes a lot of work to do everything that he does, and why he is passionate about what he does. He made a good point that because we live here, it is important for us younger generations to keep the culture alive and keep the island safe, and I agree. We had to move rocks, so I think that was the most difficult part of it, since there was a specific way he told us to do it and we wanted to be respectful of that. We also weren't completely prepared for it, so if we go back, next time I would bring things like sunscreen and water shoes since we were out in the sun and standing on rocks. I was pretty attentive while he was talking, since I was interested in hearing about everything he was saying, but if I went back I think I would also try to show more that I'm paying attention and am interested. |
